There are always times when we get so caught up in what’s going on in our lives that we forget to appreciate ourselves. Family, friends, school, career, commitments…it’s easy to get wrapped up in your busy schedule, but remember to take a step back, look in the mirror, and say: Hey! I'm worth it. Check out these little ways to show yourself some love and attention every day, no matter how hectic your life is.
1. Spoil yourself
You don't have to live life under constant limitations and rules. Treating yourself or splurging on something that you particularly want every now and then is great and can boost your mood. You’ve earned it! So, sleep in that extra hour, buy those new shoes, or plan a trip! Enjoy something that you've always wanted to and you'll feel like a million bucks.
2. Surround yourself with positivity
Instead of dwelling on upsetting or stressful things in your life, focus on the things that make you feel good. From taking a break, to listening to your favorite playlist, or getting lunch with some friends, allow yourself to shut out the negatives and embrace all things that fill you with happiness and make you smile. If you journal, it can be helpful to create a daily gratitude log to note all of the things you’re grateful for, rather than dwelling on the bad things you can’t change.
3. Get active
Show your body some love by getting active! Go for a run, do some yoga, try a dance class, or even clean the house with some fun music. Doing these types of activities can help you let off some steam and relax your mind. And releasing endorphins is definitely going to make you feel great!
4. Write yourself positive messages
Leave inspirational and motivating messages around your room or home to remind yourself why you are so special. Write notes on your mirror, in your phone, leave them in your car, and even in your pockets. If you want to be creative, make a positive message jar that you can pick from every day. One note can make all the difference.
5. Don’t compare yourself to other people
If everyone was created the same, there wouldn’t be anything special or unique about us. We’re all different and beautiful in our own way. Social media can create norms about what qualities we should have or clothes we should buy, but remember that you don’t need to impress anyone but yourself.
6. Take alone time
Most of our day is spent surrounded by others. It's important to take a step back, find a nice quiet spot, and hang out with yourself! Try to stay off of social media at this time, and consider reading a new book or taking a walk.
7. Accept your flaws
No one is perfect. Some of our “flaws” are unchangeable and accepting that is a good start to learning to finding self love. Learn how to embrace your flaws and understand that they make you who you are. The first step in embracing your flaws is figuring out what they are. But remember, your flaws don’t define who you are as a person.
8. Appreciate life
Throughout the day, many things can get in the way of peaceful thinking and being present. Being present means to have an awareness of yourself and your surroundings. Learn how to step away from your busy schedule for a few minutes to appreciate yourself, your accomplishments, and the days ahead of you.
