Esports Scholarships
Your parents might not think it’s a sport, but gaming has grown a lot in the last decade. Esports arenas are popping up around the world and prize money can top one-million dollars. Gaming is becoming the latest frontier to offer scholarships with the industry expecting to hit $1.1 billion in revenue and create a fan base of nearly 454 million watchers.
No longer is gaming looked at as a simple pastime, it’s now an opportunity to be able to show what you’ve got against your fellow gaming competitors, and earn scholarships in the process. Don’t be discouraged if your game isn’t yet a part of this growing industry. As attention grows towards this sector, there will undoubtedly be an expansion of opportunities. Here are some of the Esports scholarships and awards available:
UC Irvine Esports
Description: In order to qualify for this particular scholarship, you must be a full-time student at UCI and be a diamond or Master in League of Legends. You may also be required to tryout if chosen for the team.
Scholarship Amount: Up to $6,000 for varsity teams and up to $1,000 for junior varsity teams
Robert Morris (RMU) Scholarship
Description: RMU is to offer a 4 year scholarship for a variety of games including League of Legends, Super Smash Bros, Overwatch, Rocket League, and more. Inquiry through their online form and website is needed.
Scholarship Amount: Varies
Midland University Esports Scholarship
Description: Midland University offers free room and board for chosen applicants to this program. Contacting the head coach and filling out and online application are required.
Scholarship Amount: Room and Board
NYU Evo Scholarship
Description: In partnership with the Evo Tournament, The NYU Game Center provides this scholarship to students wanting to study game design on their campus. Those with a passion and interest in fighting games and esports in general are encouraged to apply.
Scholarship Amount: Varies
Southwestern College Esports Grant
Description: This is an annually renewable grant to be either a participant or competitor within the esports program of Southwestern College in Kansas. The participants must attend and assist in all of the esports events held by the university and have a goal of becoming a competitor. Competitors will have top-tier access to the computers within the esports center, an annual membership to TeSPA, and a valid vote in the next year’s gaming equipment.
Scholarship Amount: Up to $5,000
Trine University Esports Activity Award
Description: This is an annually renewable award provided for a full-time student with a solid academic standing who is not a part of a graduate program.
Scholarship Amount: $2,000
Indiana Tech Esports Scholarships
Description: The Indiana Tech eSports program began as a club sport, and the university is now offering scholarships to attend their school and play esports competitively.
Scholarship Amount: Varies
