Reusing is the Way to Go
You know everything you bought for your college dorm: the futon, the bins, the chair, lamp, curtains - everything that's collecting dust in storage? Well, dig it all out because you finally get to reuse it! Figure out what will go right with the style you're going for. You'll also be able to clean your storage out because if you don't want to reuse certain items now, you most likely won't later on and you can just donate it.
There are also ways to search for great secondhand decor. Try places like thrift stores, flea markets, consignment stores, or on Craigslist. Not only will you be getting a deal, you'll probably find some unique items that you wouldn't find at a chain retailer.
Double Duty Furniture
When you think about it, items in our everyday life are utilized for multiple jobs. For example we use our phones for alarms, jars as cups and piggy banks, and my cat uses just about everything as a bed. So look for furniture that can be used for multiple jobs. For example, a small desk can also be utilized as a night stand. Even the desk chair can be used as an extra seat when friends come over. Find the essential things you need— and when you're shopping, think about the other ways it can be used.
Small Decoration, Big Difference
So you have the set up you want but something seems like it's missing. Adding simple elements like a throw pillow, a plant, candle, decorative vase, or a photo, can make all the difference and add a little more flair and personality to your apartment. Another tip is to buy wall decals and back splashes. These can make any plain, empty wall look fresh and new. There are hundreds of designs and they are easily removable (and won't do damage to the wall). Did I mention budget friendly?
Shop Wayfair
This is one of my go-to places to buy furniture and décor. Spend less on furniture and other home goods with free shipping at Wayfair. Search over ten million products from over ten thousand suppliers for that perfect centerpiece or last touch to your room. They have everything you need from furniture, decor, outdoor, bathroom, kitchen, and more!
Always Check Online
Whenever you are out shopping and see something you would definitely buy, check the price online first because there could be a sale or discount that you are missing out on. Some places to look are Amazon, Wayfair, Overstock, Target, and Etsy. Consider signing up for emails to receive first notice of online sales at your favorite stores to stay in the loop!
Think Long Term
Your first apartment won't be your last, so think about this when shopping. You don't want to continuously move a giant couch, right? Buy items that can be easily stored or taken apart. Don't buy something because it looks good at the moment but that you probably won't want later. Have a style in mind and invest in something that you'll be very happy with over a long period of time.
