13 Fun Things You Need to Do During Your First Semester of College
Being a college freshman is one of the best experiences you can have. It’s new and exciting, but it also flies by. Here are some ways you can make the most out of your first semester.
Get involved
Signing up for clubs the first semester of college is fun, even if you end up not going to the meetings. But trying to get involved in clubs you think are interesting is a great start for your first semester of college, and you’ll meet lots of new people with similar interests.
Go out to dinner with friends
Skip the sucky cafeteria food for a night, and go somewhere nice to eat with your new friends. After eating the same food every day, it’ll be a welcome treat.
College hopping
Take a weekend to visit your friends at their schools. See what campus life is like for them, party a little, and compare cafeteria food.
Decorate the hell out of your room
Decorating your dorm room is great because you can make it your own. Put up lights, posters from your favorite movies, signs, etc. Customize it to your preferences, and then compare with your friend’s rooms.
Host a movie night
After you’ve decorated your dorm, get a bunch of your friends together and host a movie night. You can get snacks, drinks (non-alcoholic if you’re under 21), and a bunch of your favorite movies. Or you can just binge watch movies on Netflix, which is always a great idea.
Try not to miss class
You definitely don’t want to miss class the first semester of college. But if you end up sleeping through it, don’t worry too much! It literally happens to every college student. Just set a million more alarms next time, and make sure you borrow notes from a classmate to catch up on what you missed.
Join Greek life
Greek life is a great way to make new friends. (Well, brothers and sisters, I should say.) Rush week is also a fun time, which is when you can get to know more about the frats and sororities on campus.
Attend campus events
If you have no weekend plans, campus events are always a great go-to. Schools are always hosting free events like movie nights, crafts, arcade nights, and different tournaments, and they all most likely involve free food.
Apply to your dream job
Apply for your dream job, because why not? Make sure you look into the experience and opportunities your school can give you to achieve your goals, and take advantage of them.
Attend a free campus exercise class
Whether it’s Zumba or yoga, take advantage of free exercise opportunities on campus. Not only is it fun, but it will help you become healthier and fit.
Volunteer
Before classes even started, I signed up to volunteer on my school’s website. It’s just something I love to do. Find some friends who have the same interests, and volunteer together. (Plus, it’s also a great way to build up your resume.)
Bring a friend home for the holidays
Bringing a new friend home for the holidays can be really fun, especially if they’re an international student or can’t make it to their own home. Talk each other up to your family, and explain all the fun things you do together at school.
Eat ice cream for dinner
And, finally: eat ice cream for dinner or breakfast, just because you can.
